Our esteemed Old Boy, Professor Philip Chiu Wai Yan (Class1987), has been appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK, effective from 1st February 2024. Professor Chiu is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of upper gastrointestinal surgery. His research focuses on various areas, including oesophageal cancer management, minimally invasive and robotic esophagectomy, novel endoscopic technologies for early diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, endoscopic surgery, and robotics for endoluminal surgery. Notably, he performed the first endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for the treatment of early GI cancers in Hong Kong in 2004. In 2010, he achieved another milestone by performing the first Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in Hong Kong. Furthermore, he pioneered the world’s first robotic gastric ESD in 2011, and followed it up with the world’s first robotic colorectal ESD in 2020.

Despite his busy schedule, Professor Chiu consistently provides invaluable support and guidance to our students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. His participation in career talks allows our students to benefit from his wealth of experience.
